First Video Game to Battle Obesity
Los Angeles, CA, June 2004 – With the popularity of video games consistently rising over the past few decades, it’s no wonder that today’s youth are in trouble. Never before have we seen a generation of children this inactive and overweight. These children were born into a technology-driven world and are perfectly content to trade physical activity for button pushing. While it seems that the allure of video games is here to stay, one toy company is challenging the notion that sitting still is the best way to have fun.
In partnership with Sony Pictures, Toy Quest has created the Spider-man 2 Web Action Video Gaming System for children who love video games yet need physical activity integrated into their playtime. The plug and play game cleverly disguises exercise in a challenging, interactive and enjoyable way. The thrill of playing a video game is still present: there are evil opponents to battle and difficult levels to conquer. However, winning the Spider-man 2 Web Action Video Gaming System is even more gratifying because it necessitates effort from head to toe.
By plugging the unit into their TV and strapping on the wrist and ankle sensors, the player’s every movement is mirrored by Spider-man on screen. For Spider-man to run, kick, jump, punch or sling webs, the player moves accordingly to create those actions. While the child is completely engrossed in Spider-man’s world, they are having a blast in a healthy and beneficial way.
“Children love the Spider-man role play aspect of our game, and parents love the activity level involved,” comments Bob Del Principe, V.P. of R & D for Toy Quest. “It’s a success all around, and we’re proud to produce something that so accurately targets the needs of consumers today.”
According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30.3% of children ages 6 to 11 are overweight and 15.3% are obese –staggering statistics not entirely to blame on the video game industry. Other factors such as poor eating habits and reductions in school physical education programs play a part, but whatever can be done to prevent the long-term health effects associated with childhood obesity is a step in the right direction.
The Spider-man 2 Web Action Video Gaming System is part of the Nvision line of plug and play games that includes Power Rangers, Monster Garage and Texas Holdem Poker – all of which have remarkable 16 bit graphics and cd quality sound. The games require no additional hardware or software – simply plug the unit into your TV, and you’re ready to play. Recommended for ages five and up, the Spider-man 2 Web Action Video Gaming System will be in retail stores nationwide this summer.
